How To Handle Yourself If You Get Pulled Over For A Traffic Violation

It starts in the pit of your stomach and moves up to your throat and you think “please don’t be pulling me over, I can’t afford to get a traffic ticket”. Unfortunately, you realize it is your car and you have to pull over. First, pull over slowly and don’t cut anyone off. Second, keep your hands on the steering wheel and do not take off your seat belt to get your registration. Just wait painterly until the Police Officer comes to your car and look at him or her with an non expression on your face. The kind of expression that does not say “you busted me” and not the kind of face that says “what the heck are you doing pulling me over”. Just wait and see what he or she says and then remember to follow the instructions below and be calm.

Your emotions are all over the place, first you were afraid, now you are praying he is nice. Stop praying because nice has nothing to do with it. He has a job to do and his job is to give our as many traffic tickets as possible and get you to confess to the crime before you speak another word. But now you won’t fall for his trick. He will ask you if you know why it is that he pulled your car over and not another car. At this point you will think to yourself “I don’t want to be a smart Alec and I will appeal to his good nature and say ” ” because I did not fully stop at that stop sign” “. The good news is that the Police officer will in fact not think you are a jerk. The bad news is that you just confessed to breaking the law and he didn’t even have to scare you into confessing. That is why when the Officer asks you anything you say in the most polite possible way “no officer, I don’t”.

The Police Officer will now probably write you a traffic ticket and put a note on it that you admitted it. He may even tell you he clocked you doing 80 in a 40. He may start to lecture you about speeding and the fact that you are an accident waiting to happen. Of course by this time, you will try one of two WRONG approaches. You will first start to argue that there is no way you could be doing 80 miles per hour because your car is not that fast. Or you will say you were just keeping up with traffic and he got the wrong car. Or you might try the other wrong approach and try to be sweet by saying you are sorry but you needed to get to work or you had a date with a hot girl and didn’t want to miss it. Neither of these approaches is smart. Oh and before you think it, I will tell you the “I really have to go to the bathroom” is not good either. He will tell you to think about how much longer it would have taken to get to the bathroom if you crashed along the way.

The key to helping yourself in beating this traffic ticket is nothing. In other words, the less you say the better. The quicker the whole process of the Police Officer writing the traffic ticket and sending you on your way without incident, the better. When the lawyer goes to court later on, he wants to be able to ask the Police Officer questions about the stop and if the whole thing was unremarkable, he probably won’t be able to and thus the traffic ticket may get dismissed. In other words, if you don’t argue. If you don’t beg. And if you make the whole interaction completely forgettable, that’s exactly what the officer will do. He will forget about you very quickly. Then four months later when he is in Court for your case, he won’t remember anything and the lawyer will have a better chance of getting your case dismissed.

Now what. You are sitting in your car with a yellow, or white, traffic ticket in your hand and you don’t know what to do. You have a few options. You can pay the traffic ticket. This means you will be automatically guilty, you will get three or four points on your license and your insurance will go up. Also, if you get to many points you might lose your license. Option two is to pay the traffic ticket and go to school. The problem with this is two fold. First, you will pay the entire cost of the traffic ticket and you will pay for traffic school, and you will pay administrative fees and you will pay fees to the State of Florida. Second, you have now used up one of your get out of jail free cards. In other words, the next time you get a ticket in the same year, you can not elect school and the Judge will see that you went to school. Option three is to hire a real traffic ticket lawyer. Not some random traffic ticket clinic that just opened, but a traffic ticket team with a lot of experience fighting traffic tickets.

It’s never easy knowing who to hire for a job. Whether its an interview for a job or hiring a plumber, do you ever really know who it is you are hiring. The same is true for a lawyer.
